The White Raven of the Citadel

Description

I was just listening to George RR Martin's A Clash of Kings again when I felt the urge to draw. As I hadn't yet gotten past the prologue, this scene was fresh in my mind and I figured why not try to illustrate it.

Well, I started with old Maester Cressen and the little girl Shireen and the table. Right away I felt bad about it; I generally don't draw old men and little girls, and I think the perspective came out all wonky and wrong. Hell when it came time to draw the raven I realized I had never drawn a raven before and wasn't really all that sure how it should look, so I guessed.

Ill feeling aside I carried on and just kep going. Next came the fool Patchface, another figure I don't draw much: a fat simpleton. As I started adding the hanging raven cages though I started to feel better about it and just ressolved to fill up the entire page.

When I'd filled in most of the page I did what I should've done in the first place, went onto google image search and found a picture of a raven, and that's how I got the more accurate raven's head in the foreground.

There are plenty of problems with it- perspective, composition, that I did a scene this crowded and deservingg of detail on 8.5"x11", all the figures-, but in the end I rather like it.

I eagerly await Martin's next book in the series, A Dance for Dragons.

I was so gutted at what happened to Cressen, even though we only knew him for the prologue, and Shireen just tugs at my heartstrings, poor girl!

I love that you filled the whole page, a lot of times in fan art you get a lot of portraits and such but not whole scenes, I try to push myself to do them more but it's so intimidating! So kudos to you, I get a distinct feel from the picture, things are a little ramshackle which makes you feel how forlorn Dragonstone must be.
